
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom isn’t as simple as picking a waterproof cover and calling it a day. You’ve got high-voltage gear sitting in a room full of steam and condensation. Water loves to find a way to ground, and if it finds a path through your wiring, you’ve got a serious problem. To get this right, we obsess over two things: the materials we use and how we seal the joints.
Dealing with Damp Air
Here’s the thing about humidity: it makes air way more conductive. In a steamy bathroom, moisture clings to the lamp housing and creates these tiny “bridges” that electricity can jump across. To stop that, we stick with high-grade quartz glass and specific ceramics. Why? Because they don’t care if they’re soaked; they keep the current where it belongs. If you use cheap insulators, you’re just asking for a ground fault. We make sure our parts can handle sudden voltage spikes without just giving up.
Locking Out the Moisture
The real danger zone is where the wire hits the lamp. That’s usually where things fail. We use hermetic seals at every connection point to stop moisture from creeping inside. If you don’t have an airtight seal, you get “wicking”—that’s when water basically crawls along the inside of the wire insulation right into the core of the heater. And please, forget about standard PVC cabling. It can’t take the heat. After a few cycles of heating up and cooling down, PVC cracks. Once it cracks, the water gets in. We use cabling that’s actually built for the heat.
The Balancing Act: Heat vs. Seals
Now, there’s a catch. Tight seals are great for safety, but they trap heat. If you wrap a unit too tightly to keep the water out, the internal components can’t breathe. If you aren’t careful with the thermal load, you’ll literally melt your own wiring or kill the lamp’s lifespan. It’s a trade-off. You need a high IP rating for safety, but you also need a smart plan to move that heat away from the electronics. It’s all about finding that sweet spot so the system stays safe without burning itself out.
