
Picking the Right IR Heater for Your Bathroom: A No-Nonsense Guide
Let’s be honest: nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing cold bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. We build our infrared heating lamps with an IP44 rating, which is just a fancy way of saying they can handle the splashes and steam of a wet room without quitting on you. But the real trick isn’t just buying a lamp—it’s picking the right wattage. If you go too big in a tiny room, you’re just wasting electricity and making the fixture run way too hot. Go too small? You’ll be shivering while you dry off.
Getting the Power Right
It mostly comes down to how much air you’re trying to warm up and how well your walls keep the heat in. If you’ve got a small powder room (under 4m²), a low-wattage lamp—somewhere between 250W and 400W—is plenty. It gives you that instant, cozy warmth the second you flip the switch. For those bigger master baths (8m² to 12m²), you’ll want to step up to 600W or even 1000W. One thing to keep in mind: distance matters. Infrared heat doesn’t travel forever. The further away the lamp is from where you’re standing, the less you’ll feel it. Keep that in mind when you’re deciding where to mount it.
The Trade-off with Waterproofing
Since these lamps are sealed up tight to keep water out (that’s the IP44 part), the heat can sometimes get trapped around the base. It’s not a huge deal, but you do need to make sure your wiring and sockets are up for the task. They need to handle that constant heat without wearing out. Also, be careful with the heavy hitters. A 1000W lamp heats up fast—which is great—but it pulls a lot of juice. If you wire a few of these onto one circuit, you might find yourself staring at a tripped breaker.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Here is my best advice: stop over-specing. You don’t need a monster heater for a small space. And if you have a huge bathroom, don’t just buy one massive, scorching lamp. That just creates one “hot spot” while the rest of the room stays chilly. Instead, use a few mid-range lamps and spread them across the ceiling. It creates a much more even glow of heat, making the whole room feel comfortable rather than just one corner.
