
Fixing the “Cold Spot” Problem in Glassware Annealing
If you’ve ever had a piece of glassware crack out of nowhere, you know the frustration. Usually, it comes down to one thing: temperature dead zones. When you’re working with weird shapes—think narrow necks or deep flasks—standard IR lamps just can’t hit every spot. You end up with these annoying cold patches that leave internal stress in the glass. That’s a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen. We tackle this by pairing high-output IR lamps with reflectors that actually do their job.
Getting the Beam Right
Here’s the thing: a bare IR lamp throws heat in every direction. If you just stick one in a kiln, you’re wasting half your energy heating up the walls of the machine. It’s a waste of power. We use gold-coated or polished aluminum reflectors to bounce that wasted heat right back onto the glass. But the real trick is in the curve. By switching from a parabolic to an elliptical shape, we can basically “stretch” the heat. This means the energy actually reaches into the deep recesses of a flask or right up into the neck of a bottle. The glass gets to the annealing point, no matter how funky the shape is.
Balancing the Heat
For those thick-walled pieces, you need a lot of punch. That’s why we use high-wattage, short-wave lamps. They hit hard and fast. But there’s a catch. If you concentrate all that power into one tiny spot, you risk overheating the glass and warping the whole piece. It’s a balancing act. You have to get the focal length and the distance to the glass just right so you get a steady soak of heat rather than a scorching hot spot.
Keeping Things Running
Nobody wants to spend their afternoon rebuilding a heating array just because one bulb popped. We designed our reflectors for quick swaps. You just slide the new lamp in, wire it up, and you’re back in business. No need to spend an hour recalibrating the focal point. One quick tip: keep an eye on the dust. Carbon buildup and grime love to settle on these reflectors. It might not look like much, but it kills the reflectivity. If your temperatures start dipping or getting uneven, grab a cloth and clean them off. It makes a world of difference.
